Description
Identification & Markings: Manufacturer: .58 Caliber. Springfield Armory; Lock plate dated 1861. Lock Plate: Features a clear Eagle motif and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”. Inventory Mark: “598” stamped on the buttplate tang, indicating a military rack or unit inventory number. Configuration & Alterations: Overall Length: 49.5″ (shortened from 56″). Barrel: Cut down by ~6.5″ with a non-professional “field-cut” muzzle finish. Stock: Forend is cut down; middle/upper barrel bands and nose cap are absent. No inspector cartouches remain on the wood. Ramrod: Present; original style. Includes a replica copy of the Rules for the Management and Cleaning of the Rifle Musket, Model 1863. Historical Context An early-war infantry weapon later modified for civilian “forager” or hunting use. While sporterized, the 1861 date and “598” rack number preserve its authentic Civil War service origins. Antique. Please see photos for condition.
