Lot 1017:
Description
Handsome example of a .40 caliber, long-barrel American flintlock rifle (Kentucky Rifle), featuring a tiger maple stock that displays a vibrant, striped grain throughout. The lock plate is clearly marked “MASLIN WARRANTED,” identifying it as a lock produced by Michael M. Maslin, a prominent lockmaker who operated in Baltimore (circa 1822-1833) and Philadelphia (1833-1847). The rifle is adorned with ornate brass furniture, including a brass sideplate, trigger guard, and a decorative patch box, complemented by several silver-toned oval escutcheons along the forestock. The buttstock displays an intricate relief carving, showing classic scrollwork and a stylized cheekrest design. This piece is well-maintained for its age; the wood shows minor surface marks from light use and storage. The brass has developed a pleasing natural patina and the barrel has a nice brownish finish. Bore clean and rifling is strong. Mechanically, the action and trigger function, however, the trigger/hammer mechanism needs adjusting or repair. Please see photos for overall condition. S/N: None
