Description

An exceptionally rare and important piece of mechanical music history, this is an early 19th-century floor-standing barrel organ by the noted London maker, G. Astor & Co. The elegant Sheraton-style cabinet is crafted from mahogany with delicate string inlay and stands on slender tapered legs. The instrument retains its original maker’s instruction label and a handwritten tune card. The lot includes the organ and a separate case containing two additional pinned barrels for a total of at least four barrels. This is a remarkable survivor from the dawn of mechanical music. The organ plays when cranked. The cabinet’s finish is nice with a lower side door is unattached but present. The organ stands 59" tall, 27" wide, and 19" deep.
