Description

Lot includes a 1920’s Madame Hendren #226 talking doll in good condition. Composition head, arms and legs with no cracks or peeling. Hair wig, sleep eyes, open mouth with tongue and teeth. Clothing has been replaced but original dress is included. Phonograph mechanism complete and working with 1 Mother Hubbard cylinder included. Mech winds and plays slow so it will need servicing. Comes with wicker rocker

The "Madame Hendren" name was trademarked in 1915, but the first talking versions specifically using the phonograph mechanism appeared around 1922. These dolls were often sold under the trade name Dolly-Rekord and are considered highly collectible due to their complex mechanical nature. Unlike many dolls of the era, these were sometimes awarded as premiums for newspaper or magazine subscriptions rather than being sold in general stores.
Lot also includes a battery operated Susie Scribbles doll released in 1987 by Wonderama Toys, Inc.. of Edison NJ. She was highly innovative for her time, designed to "talk" and "write" simultaneously using a built-in cassette player. When a tape is played, her mechanical right arm moves to write in script or print, draw pictures, and even solve math problems. In overall VG original condition. Comes with one "French" cassette tape and one "Spelling" cassette tape and instructions. Takes 2 C batteries. Battery box clean, doll untested.
