Lot 2271:
Description
This authentic WWII-era A-2 leather flight jacket belonged to a Major (indicated by the gold-toned oak leaf rank insignia) named MacDonald, as evidenced by the internal stencil and chest leather nametape. A true piece of history, it features a hand-painted or sewn leather “Blood Chit” on the reverse—a vital tool for downed pilots to communicate with Chinese civilians for aid—and a multi-piece leather 14th Air Force “Flying Tigers” patch on the left shoulder. The right shoulder bears a Nationalist Chinese/U.S. shield patch, and the chest features Sterling silver pilot wings. The jacket is constructed of dark brown horsehide or goatskin with a working “Crown” brand chevron zipper and classic knit cuffs and waistband. The leather shows heavy, honest wear and “crazing” throughout, particularly on the shoulder patches and back blood chit; the knit cuffs and waistband have significant moth damage and fraying, and the internal lining shows staining and wear consistent with heavy service use. No glow of any threads under black light. H 26″, W 19″, D 2″ Please see photos.
