Lot 2224a:
Description
1941 Hamilton 4992B Navigational Gimbals Watch US Property. This 1941 Hamilton 4992B “Gimbals” watch is a premier example of WWII American horology, featuring a high-grade 22-jewel movement (serial 4C42243) adjusted to temperature and six positions. Produced during the critical first year of U.S. involvement in the war, this “Master Navigation Watch” was essential for pilots and navigators, utilizing a “hack” feature for precise time synchronization. The timepiece is housed in its original U.S. property-marked aircraft navigational case (AN 5838-1), which features a spring-cushioned gimbal mount by the I.D. Watch Case Co. to protect the movement from cockpit vibrations. The movement shows exceptional cleanliness and vibrant damaskeening; the 12-hour white dial remains crisp with a clear crystal, and minimal wear. The exterior gray-painted metal housing exhibits authentic service wear, including surface scuffs and minor oxidation, consistent with its 1941 military deployment. H 2″, W 4″, D 4″.
