Description

Here is a fine example of an original, blank firing, World War II German 7.5cm le.IG 18 Bespg. infantry support gun. Designed and manufactured by Rheinmettal-Borsig, the IG 18 featured a high elevation capability of up to 73°, allowing it to fire effectively over mountain ridges at a distance of up to 4000 yards. It fired a 75mm high-explosive cased cartridge shell and served as an organic infantry support weapon, providing immediate direct and indirect fire for mountain battalions without needing to wait for heavier divisional artillery. Unlike the standard IG field version, the 7.5 cm le.IG 18 Bespg. was outfitted with wooden spoked wheels for horse-drawn towing. This particular gun features the heavy-duty steel with wooden-spoke wheels and the distinctive wavy-edged gun shield. The breech and trail are marked with serial number “187” and the barrel displays serial number 5586. The cradle also displays the markings “408A/RH306/1939, dating the manufactured of the gun to 1939. There are also visible ordnance markings on the shield to include “569ckl / 1941”, “558ckl / 1941” and “1299ckl / 1942” which was the World War II German manufacturer code for Eisenund Hüttenwerke AG in Thale/Harz. German inspection proof markings, to include the Reichsadler, are located on various structural components, serving as the official inspection and acceptance proofs from the German military. The gun displays the German "Hinterhalt" (Ambush) Pattern paint scheme. The gun has been demilitarized, however, is fitted to fire blank rounds. The breech opens smoothly and the elevation and traverse controls work properly. The gun carriage is mobile and both wheels move freely. The shields lower plate is free and can be raised and lowered. Overall, this is an excellent example of the le.IG 18 Bespg. and a great piece for any reenacting group, collector, or museum that wants to elevate their collection. Please see photos for overall condition. W 60", L 112", H 42".
