The 1904 Republican National Convention. where Theodore Roosevelt secured the nomination to run for his first full term as President. Unlike modern conventions, which are often media-driven pep rallies, the 1904 convention was a massive logistical feat held in the fortress-like Chicago Coliseum on Wabash Avenue. Section 28 would have offered an elevated, panoramic view of the 994 delegates on the floor below. While the floor was reserved for voting delegates and alternates, section 28 would have been occupied by honored guests, press, and high-ranking party supporters. Accompanying the ticket is a bold, fountain pen “cut” signature of John Wentworth of Chicago, Illinois. Wentworth, a legendary Chicago figure known as “Long John,” was a mayor (the 16th of Chicago) and congressman; notably. Although “Long John” Wentworth died in 1888, his legacy loomed large over Illinois Republicans for decades. It was common for convention-goers to collect autographs of past and present Illinois luminaries during these three-day political festivals. The ticket displays crisp typography and ornate Victorian-style borders, while the signature card shows a sharp, sweeping script typical of 19th-century dignitaries. Both items are in excellent vintage condition with minor edge toning and a small diagonal clip to the bottom left corner of the signature card. Ticket: H 1.25″, W 2.75″, Signature: H 1.75″, W 4.5″.
