Description
This vibrant collection features five hand-carved and polychrome-painted wooden masks, traditionally representing the Barong or protective spirits of Balinese mythology. These masks exhibit the classic folk-art style of Indonesia, characterized by bulging eyes, bared fangs, and intricate headdresses accented with gold leaf or “prada” finishes. The larger mask serves as a dramatic centerpiece with its flared “ears” and deep green base, while the four smaller companions—carved in various red and cream tones—display slightly different facial expressions and “flame” motifs along the crown. The craftsmanship indicates mid-to-late 20th-century production intended for both cultural performance and the decorative export market. Overall condition is good with some expected surface wear, minor pigment loss, and light scuffing to the raised edges, particularly on the ear tips and fangs.
