Lot 1322:
Description
A classic and auspicious representation of a Chinese Guardian Lion, or “Shi,” likely of 20th-century manufacture. This piece captures the traditional “male” form, depicted with his right paw resting atop a patterned silk ball, representing supremacy over the world and protection of the structure. The figure is cast stone/concrete with intricate “snail” curls in the mane and a decorative chest ribbon with tassels, finished in a bright gold-toned wash over a heavy composite or metal base to emulate traditional bronze. The craftsmanship follows the ornate Qing dynasty style frequently seen in architectural statuary. The item shows visible surface wear, with significant flaking and loss of the gold finish on the base and lower extremities, exposing a darker substrate. There is some accumulated dust in the recessed carvings and minor pitting consistent with age and display. Measures 22″ x 10″x13″. Please use photos to judge condition and bid accordingly. Please note: Buyer is responsible for removal.
