Description

This vibrant, Art Deco-style lithograph by renowned artist Larry Grossman captures the iconic Fremont Theatre in San Luis Obispo, California. Built in 1940, the theatre’s signature “streamline moderne” architecture is beautifully rendered here, featuring a classic 1950s sedan in the foreground and a marquee billing film noir classics Out of the Past and The Maltese Falcon. The piece is professionally matted in a deep burgundy and gold-toned frame, protected by glass. The artwork and frame appear to be in excellent condition with no visible chips to the glass or significant scuffs to the molding; colors remain sharp and saturated. Larry Grossman is a distinguished artist and designer whose career spans over five decades. He is particularly celebrated for his “hyper-real” digital style that captures the essence of mid-century Americana. In 1981, he was hired by Disney to work as a designer on the groundbreaking film Tron, the first movie to extensively use computer technology. He has also worked for Warner Bros. and DreamWorks on classics like Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. The “RetroVisions” Style: Grossman’s work (produced under his company, RetroVisions) typically blends his own professional photography with digital airbrushing. He creates scenes that “never really occurred” but feel authentic, often featuring “lead-sled” hot rods and vintage architecture. The Landmark: The Fremont Theatre, located in downtown San Luis Obispo, CA,is a crown jewel of California cinema history. Designed by the legendary theater architect S. Charles Lee and opened on Memorial Day, 1942. It is one of the last and finest examples of the Streamline Moderne style. Measures 31″x39″x1″ framed.
