Lot 515:
Description
This striking high-relief ceramic plate commemorates Chief Sleepy Eye (Ishhtaba), a prominent Sisseton Dakota leader. Hand-incised on the reverse with the name “BERKNER, ” this piece likely originates from the Sleepy Eye, Minnesota area, produced to mark the centennial (1872–1972) of the town’s incorporation. The design features a soulful portrait of the Chief in a feathered headdress, flanked by a teepee, bows, and arrows, finished in a classic brown-tone wash that accentuates the sculptural depth. The piece is in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips or cracks, showing only minor shelf wear on the reverse and a wire hanger already attached. H 2″, W 9.5″
