Lot 515:
Description
This striking high-relief ceramic plate commemorates Chief Sleepy Eye (Ishhtaba), a prominent Sisseton Dakota leader. Hand-incised on the reverse with the name “BERKNER,” this piece likely originates from the Sleepy Eye, Minnesota area, produced to mark the centennial (1872–1972) of the town’s incorporation. The design features a soulful portrait of the Chief in a feathered headdress, flanked by a teepee, bows, and arrows, finished in a classic brown-tone wash that accentuates the sculptural depth. The piece is in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips or cracks, showing only minor shelf wear on the reverse and a wire hanger already attached. H 2″, W 9.5″
