Lot 229:
Description
This stately late 19th or early 20th-century oak bookcase commands attention with its robust architectural form and rich detailing. Likely of American origin, the cabinet features a prominent cornice embellished with deep egg-and-dart molding, sitting atop a frieze of repeating foliate carvings. The facade is divided by pilasters adorned with intricate scrollwork and rosettes, framing three large glazed doors that offer a clear view of the interior. Inside, adjustable wooden shelves provide ample space for an extensive library or collection. The backboards are constructed of vertical wood slats and bear stenciled numbers “237” and “238” near the top edge. The warm, dark oak finish highlights the grain, making this a functional yet highly decorative anchor piece for a study or living area.
Fair condition. The piece shows wear consistent with age, including surface scratches, scuffs, and areas of finish loss. There is significant structural damage to the base, particularly at the corners where large sections of veneer and molding are chipped, separated, or missing entirely (see photos). One glass door pane has a visible crack in the lower corner. The joinery at the base corners is loose in areas, and scattered white paint splatter is visible on the lower sections. Keyholes show wear, and key escutcheons are missing.
