Description
This percussion carbine was patented by Edward Maynard in 1859. By 1861, the Maynard Carbine was put into mass production and placed in the hands of the Federal Troops. The Maynard Second Model Carbine was produced between 1864 and 1865, with more than 20,000 made to arm the Federal cavalry units. The Maynard Carbine shot a .50 caliber brass cartridge and saw service on both side during the American Civil War, where it performed well. This particular carbine has a 20-inch, round rifled barrel with a fixed, front pinch sight and rear, two leaf flip sight. The left side of the receiver displays the markings “Edward Maynard / Patentee. / May 27. 1851. / Dec. 6. 1859.” and has a saddle ring attached. The right side of the receiver displays the markings “Manufactured By / Mass. Arms Co / Chicopee Falls.” The serial number is stamped on the lower tang and the walnut stock bears two government inspection ‘cartouches.’ The stock is in good condition for the its age and displays normal wear from normal handling and storage. All metal parts exhibit a factory finish, with normal wear and patina. The bore has some oxidation and the rifling is good. The lever action and hammer move smoothly and tight. All markings are clean and crisp. The overall length of the rifle is 36 7/8 inches. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum.
