Vintage Western Mining Explosives Pack
This is an absolutely fantastic and rare piece of Western Americana, specifically an antique mining explosives donkey pannier pack saddle, likely dating to the early 20th century. The heavy-duty carrying baskets, or panniers, are constructed of wood frames covered in thick hide, stitched together with what appears to be rawhide lacing and supported by a heavy rope and wood central frame designed to balance over a donkey’s back. The hide itself shows authentic wear and a rich patina. The pack is carrying two period-appropriate wooden boxes, clearly marked in bold black lettering: “ICC C-14,” “APACHE POWDER COMPANY BENTON, ARIZONA,” and “HIGH EXPLOSIVES-DANGEROUS.” These visible markings add significant character and historical context to the piece. The overall condition is remarkably well-preserved for a working piece of equipment, with expected heavy wear, staining, and material loss to the fur/hair on the hide, consistent with prolonged use in a mining or freight environment. It is currently mounted on a modern metal display stand for museum-quality presentation. H 48″, W 50″, D 18″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town. NOTE: Pickup/transport required.
