Description

This is a fantastic piece of law enforcement history: an antique Deputy Sheriff’s badge from Winnebago County, State of Illinois. The shield-style badge features the classic eagle at the top, a common element for American police and sheriff badges of the era. The main body has “DEPUTY” curved over the top, “WINNEBAGO COUNTY” and “STATE OF ILLINOIS” flanking the central state seal medallion, and the number “23” at the bottom. Illinois State seal in center. The style and design are indicative of early to mid-20th-century American police badges. The metal appears to be a nickel or silver-plated brass, showing a pleasing patina that suggests significant age. The reverse features a simple pin and catch mechanism, typical of older badges. The badge is in good overall condition for its age, showing heavy tarnish, especially in the recessed areas, and some expected surface scratches and minor wear from use. The pin mechanism on the back appears intact and functional. H 2.75″, W 1.875″. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
