Description

This is a fantastic example of a mid-to-late 19th Century tin-plated oil lantern, characterized by its arched top, small stature, and three glass panes—suggesting it was used as a darkroom lantern (for use with photographic plates) or a small ship’s binnacle or masthead lamp. The design, often referred to as a “bullseye” or “parlor” style due to its compact form, is constructed from sheet metal, likely tin or iron, which has developed a rich, dark brown, and heavily oxidized patina over time. The hinged carrying handle is intact, and the rear panel shows small ventilation slots at the bottom, which would have allowed for airflow to feed the small oil wick inside, the remnants of which are visible behind the glass. The metal structure is in good condition considering its age, showing no major dents or structural deformation. Condition is commensurate with age and use, which enhances its historical character. All three glass panes appear intact and clean. H 7″, W 3″, D 2.75″
