Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1360:
Description
Allen, Thurber & Co. double-action pepperbox revolver. A pivotal piece of American firearms history dating to the mid-19th century (circa 1854-1856). The visible markings “ALLEN THURBER & CO.” and “WORCESTER” place its manufacture squarely in Worcester, Massachusetts, during the final years of that partnership before Charles Thurber’s death. These multi-shot percussion pistols were favored for personal defense by pioneers, miners, and travelers before Samuel Colt’s cartridge revolvers fully dominated the market. The particular revolver is in fair condition, with its finish showing patina and oxidation. It has 5, 2¾-inch barrels. The bores are in fair condition, showing areas of oxidation and freckling. The action and trigger are smooth and tight. The overall length of the revolver is 6½ -inches.
