Description

Allen & Wheelock .41 caliber, drop breech, cartridge fed, single shot rifle with serial number 58. Manufactured from 1860 to the 1870’s, this rifle saw limit use during the American Civil War, and when it did, soldiers purchased the rifle privately. Only a few thousand of these rifles were produced, with an estimate of 1500 to 2000. This particular rifle has a part octagonal and part round 23.25 inch rifled barrel, displaying the markings, “Allen & Wheelock, Allen’s PAT Sep. 18. 1860”. The barrel has a front fixed sight and a swing, V notched rear sight. The left side of the receiver displays the markings, “0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10” which corresponds with the rear sight adjustment. The breech is opened by releasing a spring catch on the trigger guard and lowering the guard. The stock and forearm are made of walnut and are in good condition, showing minor use and storage marks. All metal exhibits remnants of a factory finish. The bore is clean and has very good rifling. The lever action and hammer move smoothly and tight. All markings are clean and crisp.
