Description

Springfield Model 1873 “Trapdoor” Cadet Rifle with serial number 29820 (Manf. January-March, 1874). The Springfield Model 1873 is an iconic arm of the U.S. Army after the American Civil War. It was the transition piece, marking the shift from muzzle-loading muskets to cartridge firing rifles. The Model 1873 was the Army’s standard issue rifle during the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s. The cadet rifle was manufactured for issue to military schools like West Point for training purposes.

This particular rifle, has a cut down, 25 5/8 -inch, rifled barrel, which fired a .45-70 cartridge. There is a fixed front sight with a rear sight adjustable for elevation and windage. The sight displays the “R” inscription for Rifle. The breech block (trapdoor) is marked with “Model / 1873” over an eagles head, with “US” below. The breech block marking indicates an early productions, since the eagles head was removed not to long after production started. The serial number is also visible on the receiver. The lock plate displays the “spread eagle” motif and the inscription “US / Springfield /1873”. The metal butt plate bears the “US” inscription. Additional marking of “N.J.” is located on the barrel and the barrel bands display the directional “U” stamping. The one-piece, walnut stock shows handling and storage wear, along with a light crack near the breech and front barrel band. The stock also bears multiple unidentified stamped letter markings throughout and the faint cartouche of the inspector’s stamp by the lock screws. The metal work has been coated with a black coating, which has been faded/removed from use and storage. The metal cleaning rod measures 28-inches and shows oxidation. The bore is clean, rifling is good. The hammer and trigger actions are smooth and tight. All markings are clean. The overall length of the rifle is 45″. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum.
