Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1292a:
Description
This piece is a magnificent and impressively tall Arts and Crafts Hall Tree, an essential entryway fixture of the Mission era, likely dating to the early 20th century. My initial assessment focused on the base, but upon considering its 72-inch height, it is clearly a dual-purpose hall stand. The design perfectly embodies the Arts and Crafts aesthetic with its focus on honest construction, utilizing robust, dark-stained quarter-sawn oak. The central, square post features four sets of hooks (two upper and two lower) for hanging coats, hats, and other gear, making it a true hall tree. The lower section functions as an umbrella and cane stand, with the cruciform base supporting four recessed, dark metal (likely cast iron) drip pans to collect water. The overall design, emphasizing verticality and strong, straight lines, is very much in the manner of period makers like Stickley or Limbert, though no manufacturer’s mark is immediately visible. The piece appears structurally sound with a beautiful, deep, original finish. There are minor surface scratches and expected wear consistent with age, particularly on the base and the metal drip pans, which show natural oxidation. This is a highly functional and desirable piece of period furniture. H 72″, W 18″, D 18″ NOTE: Pickup/transport required. Contacts available post auction.
