Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1291:
Description
This is a fantastic example of a quarter-sawn oak high chest of drawers, strongly exhibiting the principles of the American Arts and Crafts or Mission style, likely dating from the early 20th century (c. 1900-1920). The robust, straight lines and exposed construction—such as the square corner posts that extend to form the front legs—are hallmarks of the era’s focus on honest craftsmanship. The most distinctive feature is the hardware: the drawers are fitted with geometric, faceted wooden pulls that integrate seamlessly with the oak construction, a design choice often associated with higher-end manufacturers trying to move away from applied metal hardware. It features five drawers of uniform size, each with a brass keyhole escutcheon. The top includes a slightly peaked gallery or splashboard at the back. The piece appears to be in overall good antique condition, commensurate with its age and use. The finish is a deep, rich brown with visible quarter-sawn ray fleck, though there is general surface wear, including some minor staining/dulling to the top surface and edges, as well as some chipping evident on at least one of the wooden drawer pulls. H 52″, W 34″, D 20 NOTE: Pickup/transport required. Contacts available post auction.
