Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1279:
Description
This is a fantastic example of a Gustav Stickley Craftsman Workshops rocker, likely made of quarter-sawn oak, which embodies the clean lines and functional design of the American Arts and Crafts movement. The style is classic Stickley, featuring a straight, slatted back, wide flat arms with exposed through-tenons, and a dark, rich fuming or stain, typical of the early 20th century. The original paper label, although highly deteriorated, is still visible on the underside of the seat, confirming manufacture by “GUSTAV STICKLEY” in “THE CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOPS” located in “EASTWOOD New York” with New York City showrooms at “29 W 42d Street.” The seat appears to be the original leather upholstery showing significant cracking, creasing, and wear consistent with age and use. The wood frame shows expected wear, including minor scuffs, scratches, and a darkening patina, particularly on the arms and rockers. The joints appear tight, and the chair is structurally sound. The overall aesthetic is one of authentic age and honest use. H 34″, W 26″, D 29″ NOTE: Pickup/transport required. Contacts available post auction.
