Description

This is a prime example of an original Arts and Crafts Mission-style side chair from a highly collectible manufacturer. The piece exhibits the classic rectilinear form and emphasis on structural honesty inherent to the style, constructed from what appears to be Quarter Sawn White Oak. The highly desirable brass tag on the underside clearly identifies the maker as “Quaint Furniture, Stickley Bros. Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.”—confirming this is a product of the company founded by Albert Stickley and John George Stickley in 1891, which was a major contributor to the Mission movement. The rich, original dark stain shows beautiful ray fleck patterns on the grain. The chair is in good, used, antique condition; the seat shows the most obvious wear and fading from decades of use, and there are various scuffs and minor indentations consistent with age. A distinct, albeit crude, repair is visible on the underside of the seat, where metal staples or wire were used to reinforce a split in the wood. The structure remains solid.
