Description
This exceptional late 19th century Northern Plains Catlinite pipe showcases the artistry of Native American craftsmanship. Carved from sacred red Catlinite, revered by Plains and Woodland tribes alike, it features an effigy bowl depicting a horse or similar animal adorned with floral and radial carvings on nearly all surfaces as well as the pipe stem. The pipe stem can be separated for storage and the connecting piece and mouthpiece are both made of wood. There appears to be a surface crack on the pipe stem’s this upper part at a 45° angle, near the mouthpiece. Overall in good condition, commensurate with age. Dimensions: 23” long x 1” wide overall. Pipe effigy: 4.25” tall x 9.75” long. Stem12” long. 13.25” w/mouthpiece. See photos.
