Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1223:
Description
This appears to be a 19th to early 20th-century Native American or First Nations beaded collar or yoke, likely from a Great Lakes or Woodlands tradition, though further provenance is needed for a definitive tribal attribution. The style is classic, featuring a black cloth ground (possibly velvet or wool felt) heavily embroidered with glass seed beads. The design utilizes striking geometric floral or star motifs in white, red, and two shades of blue, set against smaller white/silver beads that define the curved lines. The outer edge is finished with an extensive, dramatic fringe composed of white and brown/amber seed beads, creating a wonderful sense of movement and visual texture. The reverse reveals a backing fabric, probably cotton or linen, which has faded to a pinkish-tan hue. The collar fastens with simple brown cloth or leather ties. The condition is consistent with age and use, showing significant wear and discoloration to the backing fabric and ties. The black ground appears generally stable, but there is some bead loss throughout, particularly noticeable in the fringe and areas around the neck opening. The colors remain vibrant where the beads are intact. H 13.5″, W 13.5″, D 0.5″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
