Description

A traditional woven Navajo basket circa 1890’s. This basket is adorned with a design (faint but present) called the Spider Woman cross which according to Navajo beliefs represents spider-woman who taught Navajo people how to weave the baskets were used the ceremonies and held sacred corn meal. This particular example has a loop of green cloth protruding from the base, likely where it hung on a wall. It does not sit quite flat, suggesting that it was hung for a very long time in a certain position. It has a herringbone pattern rim and there is some loss of material on the rim and at the base as it sits. Diameter 10” and depth at its highest 4” and lowest 2”
