Description

Traditional Native American hand drum, possibly a Plains or Woodland style, constructed from a hollowed out tree trunk. Unlike a single-headed hand drum, this is a double-headed barrel drum. The cylindrical shell, crafted from a single piece of wood (possibly cedar or oak), exhibits a robust, natural wood structure, with a natural split or crack visible on one side. Both the top and bottom openings are covered with rawhide or stretched animal skin heads. These two heads are secured and tensioned using a continuous, traditional lacing pattern of rawhide thongs that runs vertically across the wood body, connecting and tightening the two opposite rims. This double-headed design and lacing technique are characteristic of certain ceremonial and musical drums. Both rawhide heads show significant patina and wear consistent with age and use, exhibiting natural darkening and varied texture. The overall condition is fair to good vintage/antique with notable age-related wear, the prominent vertical crack in the wood body, and general scuffing, but the lacing and heads appear structurally sound, preserving its historical character.
