Description
Native American Baskets, Tray, Beaded Pouch
This is an attractive collection of five pieces of Native American art, including four woven baskets/trays and a beaded leather pouch, likely dating from mid to late-20th century. The woven items are crafted from natural plant fibers and grasses, exhibiting fine coiling and twining techniques with geometric and floral-inspired designs in natural tones of straw, dark brown, and terracotta. The shallow, round basket with the dark quatrefoil-like design and the two smaller trays show sophisticated pattern work, typical of tribes in the Southwest or Plateau regions. The smaller, taller basket features a distinctive stepped pattern. Complementing the woven pieces is a supple leather drawstring pouch with fringe, which is beautifully adorned with beadwork in a floral motif of red, black, and green on a sky-blue background, beaded on both sides. The condition of all pieces is generally very good, showing age-appropriate minor fading and some slight fraying of the fibers, particularly on the edges of the trays, which is consistent with use and age. The beadwork on the pouch appears intact and vibrant. H 6.5″, W 16.5″, D 16.5″. See photos. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
