Description
A monumental and truly exceptional trade sign from “Meyer’s Drug Store.” The sign was used at 77 W. Main street and the store is featured on pages 100-102 of the Cary Me Back History book. .One side is a masterpiece of the sign-maker’s art, featuring large, hand-carved wooden letters with a heavily crazed and weathered gilt finish. On the left and right sides of the sign are beautifully hand-painted advertisements of popular drug store wares like “Kodaks,” “Cigars-Candy,” and “Deli Ice Cream.” This is a significant piece of American commercial history and folk art, with an incredible visual presence. The carved letters show significant aging, with heavy cracking and flaking to the gilt lettering, and some breaks in the wood as shown in the photos. The paint shows weathering consistent with its age and purpose. This impressive sign measures 28 feet long by 27 inches tall.
