October Fall Classic
Lot 2126a:
Description
A superb and highly artistic 19th-century American trade sign for “H.D. Mosher, Tailor.” This piece is a wonderful example of folk art, featuring a beautifully weathered blue-gray painted surface on three wood planks. The applied letters have a worn gilt finish, and the sign retains its original hand-forged iron hanging brackets. Importantly, the sign is signed by its maker in a painted cartouche in the lower right, “R. Nichols, Pt.” (Painter). Signs with this level of character, originality, and signed craftsmanship are exceptionally desirable. The sign is in wonderful, unmolested condition, with an honest, alligatored paint surface and age cracks that speak to its history. The sign dimensions are 41 “x20” x2″excluding the hangers.
