Description

This is a fantastic example of an early 20th-century commercial spring balance scale, manufactured by the New York Scale Co., New York, U.S.A. The dial proudly states “Improved Spring Balance,” and it has a capacity of 30 Pounds. Constructed with a heavy brass or bronze-toned metal casing and a glass lens, these rugged scales were workhorses in general stores, butcher shops, and farms. The design is classic and utilitarian, featuring a large circular dial with clear black numbering and markings for half-pound () and potentially eighth-pound () increments, although the smaller markings are difficult to discern precisely. The scale is equipped with a large, fixed suspension hook at the top for hanging and a heavy-gauge, fixed load hook at the bottom. Basket is not present. The condition is appropriate for its age and use; the metal casing shows a lovely, dark patina and some surface scratches and wear, consistent with an antique item. The dial face is a creamy white/off-white with visible discoloration, smudges, and minor staining, but all markings and text are clearly legible. The glass lens appears intact, and the pointer seems to be functional based on the various readings shown in the images (it shows a reading of about 8 lbs in one image and about 3 lbs in another, suggesting it is operational). As with most vintage measuring instruments, it will likely need to be calibrated for precise use. H 10.5″, W 10.5″, D 2.75″. See photos.
