Description

This is a fantastic lot for the railway collector, featuring two vintage railroad lanterns and a long-spout oiler. The lanterns are clearly identifiable as a pair of short-globe Adlake Kero lanterns. One has a red globe for a stop or warning signal, and the other has a clear globe. Close-up images show one lantern top is embossed with “ADAMS & WESTLAKE CO.” and “NEW YORK” with the date “1925”, confirming the maker and a nice early date stamp. The second lantern’s top is marked “HANDLAN ST. LOUIS, U.S.A.” with a clear Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) keystone logo, indicating a different maker (Handlan-Buck Mfg. Co.) and a railroad-specific application. Both are classic fixed-globe, wire-frame lanterns, typical of conductors and brakemen’s lights. The accompanying long-spout oiler is a sturdy piece marked with a diamond-in-circle logo and “U.S. OIL CO.” and “URBANA, O.” on the bottom, likely a railway maintenance item. The set shows significant patina, surface rust, and wear consistent with long service life in a harsh environment. The lanterns’ wire frames are slightly bent, and the metal shows age-related discoloration and scratching. The oiler has a deep, aged patina. Oiler is 26.5″ tall, W 4″, D 4′. Lanterns measure H 15″, W 6.25″, D 6.25″ and H 16″, W 6.25″, D 6.25″. See photos.
