October Fall Classic
Lot 1293:
Description
This is a handsome pair of classical-style Campana-form urns with square plinth bases, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Cast iron garden urns like these were highly popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras for formal gardens and estate entrances, often produced by prominent foundries. The shape is derived from ancient Roman vessels, featuring a deep bowl and an elaborate volute and foliate scroll handle on either side, adding a touch of Neoclassical elegance. The bases feature a decorative medallion motif within a recessed panel. The material is, of course, heavy cast iron, which accounts for the impressive weight and durability, though it also contributes to the current condition. Visually, one urn in one of the sets of pictures appears to have an internal collar and a central pipe which suggests it may have functioned as a fountain element or a fire basket, or perhaps it is a variation of the design. The current condition is heavily weathered, consistent with prolonged outdoor exposure. Both pieces show heavy surface oxidation (rust), particularly in the interiors of the bowls, which is expected for cast iron of this vintage. The black paint/patina is worn and flaking, revealing the reddish-brown rust beneath. Break/damage to one of the elaborate handles. The bases also show significant rust and wear. Bases are separate. Each base is 10″ tall. 16.5″L x16.5″ W. Urns both measure 24″ tall. 36″ widest (includes arms) and 20.5″ bowl diameter. See photos for condition.
