Description

This is an impressive lost-wax cast bronze garden figure depicting an itinerant Asian peasant or traveler in a traditional conical rice hat (kasa or dou lì) carrying a yoke or staff over his shoulder. The monumental scale and the rich, naturalistic verdigris patina suggest this piece was intended for outdoor use, perhaps as a focal point in an Asian-style garden or landscape. The figure is realistically rendered, showing an older, bearded man with a sense of weariness or reflection, dressed in flowing robes tied at the waist, and standing barefoot on a low, ornate base decorated with lotus-style petals and leaves. The casting quality is good, capturing the folds of the clothing and the texture of the beard. The condition appears sound with a desirable, stable, and attractive green-blue patina from long-term exterior exposure. There are no obvious breaks, though surface dirt and some small detritus are present in the crevices, consistent with its likely use as a garden ornament. The item appears to be in overall good structural condition. H 41″, W 23″, D 12″. See photos.
