Lot 1266c:
Description
This fascinating lot of early 20th-century American farm ephemera offers a glimpse into a bygone era, featuring three distinct framed pieces. The centerpiece is a framed Franklin Lightning Rod Works Guaranty Certificate, Series H, No. 47976, issued on July 17, 1908, to P. C. Haskin of Waterville, New York. It guarantees protection up to for a term of five years, and the document is signed by a representative of Cole Bros. Lightning Rod Company of Saint Louis, MO. The document is filled out in period handwriting and features an embossed red seal, and it is housed in a handsome wood frame with a gilt finish and an inner beaded trim. Also included is a framed, enlarged photographic portrait of an older gentleman with a mustache and glasses, wearing a flat cap and a light-colored collared shirt, likely a family member or the certificate recipient. This sepia-toned portrait is in a large, ornate black wood frame. The final piece is a framed color photograph from the AK-SAR-BEN 4-H Grand Champion show of 1946, featuring a champion steer named “Fed by Roland Kreiger, Wiener, Nebraska,” weighing 1,010 lbs, and consigned to F. A. Wellman & Sons. The items are in overall good antique condition. The papers show expected yellowing and minor foxing, particularly the lightning rod certificate. The frames exhibit general wear, including minor scuffs and chips consistent with age, but all appear structurally sound and ready for display. Framed certificate 11.75″ x 17.5″. Framed Livestock photo 10.25″ x 8.25″. Framed Portrait photo 15.5″ x18.5″. See photos.
