October Fall Classic
Lot 1264a:
Description
This is a wonderful example of a figural cast iron boot scraper, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Cast iron figural pieces were very popular for hearth and outdoor implements during this period, and this piece embodies that robust, utilitarian aesthetic. It features a figure of a stable hand removing his boots, seated atop a scrolling arch that frames the scraper blade. The whole assembly is mounted on a scallop-edged, oval drip pan, which is supported by four integrally cast feet on the underside. The two vertical supports for the scraper blade are detailed with scrolling acanthus-like ornamentation at the base, resting in the drip pan. The material is heavy black cast iron, showing a dark, aged patina. The piece is in good, solid antique condition, displaying the expected surface rust and oxidation consistent with age and long-term outdoor use. There are no visible breaks or repairs, but the entire surface shows pitting, wear, and dust/cobwebs, suggesting it has not been recently cleaned or restored. H 13.5″, W 12″, D 10″. See photos.
