October Fall Classic
Lot 1226b:
Description
This is an exceptional pair of antique architectural wood panels, exhibiting highly detailed Gothic Revival or Neoclassical style elements. The design, featuring engaged columns with foliate capitals, quatrefoil, and rosette motifs, along with pointed Gothic arch tracery, suggests a likely date range from the 1700s (particularly in continental Europe where earlier styles persisted) through the late 1800s when Gothic Revival became widely popular. The panels, likely constructed of oak or a similar hardwood, were probably salvaged from a grand home, chateau, or ecclesiastical setting. They feature a deep, aged, dark brown patina over what appears to be remnants of an earlier, lighter finish. The panels are currently hinged together with rustic, decorative, wrought-iron hinges, which may be later additions. The overall condition is commensurate with architectural salvage and age; there is heavy wear, cracking, splitting, and significant wood loss along the bottom edges. Remnants of gesso or lighter paint are visible, and the hinges display heavy surface rust. H 94″, W 40″, D 3″. Please see photos.
