October Fall Classic
Lot 1213b:
Description
This is a fantastic piece of mid-century industrial Americana: a vintage, light-colored cotton twill shop coat, likely from the 1940s or 1950s. It features a distinguished dark blue collar, cuffs, and a matching fabric belt with a metal buckle, all hallmark details of classic service uniforms. The garment sports a stylized, white embroidered Firestone patch cross stitched on the left breast..
The coat’s construction is classic, rugged workwear with chest and hip pockets. The internal tag indicates the coat is a size 42, “UNION MADE,” “100% COTTON,” and manufactured by “W WORK WEAR Corporation, Cleveland Overall Division.” A critical piece of historical provenance is the ink stamp on the back collar: “LEASED FROM F. W. MEANS & CO. NEVER SOLD,” a common inscription for industrial uniform rental and cleaning services, adding to its authentic history as a uniform used in a demanding setting.
The overall condition is heavily soiled and stained, consistent with actual use in an automotive or industrial setting. It has widespread discoloration and numerous grease or dirt marks, which, for a collector, enhances its authentic vintage patina. H 49″, W 19″ (shoulders), D 1″ (flat). See photos.
