October Fall Classic
Lot 1212i:
Description
Vintage GM Jet Age Hood Ornaments. This is a sharp trio of chrome-plated, die-cast metal hood and fender ornaments, a true encapsulation of the “Jet Age” design aesthetic that dominated General Motors in the mid-1950s. The lot includes a classic Pontiac “Chief” or Indian head hood ornament—likely the 1955 model known for its streamlined, supersonic profile—and two Chevrolet “Flying V” or jet-plane style ornaments, which were particularly popular on the Tri-Five (1955-1957) models like the Bel Air. The largest piece, the Pontiac Indian, is a stunning example of period art deco automotive sculpture. The “V” emblems are a classic representation of Chevy’s shift toward an aviation-inspired look. All three pieces are in original, heavily patinated “barn find” condition, featuring substantial uniform pitting, heavy surface oxidation, and dulling/loss of the original chrome plating across the board. The two smaller, V-shaped ornaments (likely 1956 and 1955 Chevy) show a white, oxidized residue in the recesses. They are structurally sound, with no visible cracks or major breaks, and retain their original mounting bolts or display armatures. This lot is an excellent candidate for restoration or display as-is for the collector who appreciates original patina. H 9″, W 14.75″, D 19.25″
