October Fall Classic
Lot 1210a:
Description
This is a fantastic find for any petroliana or automotive collector—a genuine early Marvel Mystery Oil One Gallon Tin from the Emerol Manufacturing Co., Inc. out of 242 West 69th St., New York. As one of the most enduring and recognizable brands in top-cylinder lubrication, this can is a cornerstone piece. The striking orange and black graphics, featuring the bold “MM” logo and instructional text for “Intake Valves,” “Exhaust Valves,” “Winter Lubrication,” and use with “New Bearing Alloys,” place this can squarely in the pre-WWII to early Post-War era, likely the 1930s or 1940s. It features a flat top with a metal carrying bail and the original screw cap and pour spout, signifying a one-gallon measure. The can shows honest wear commensurate with age, including surface rust, particularly on the top and unprinted edges, scattered scratches, and some small denting, but the bright graphics remain highly visible and fully legible, with only minor fading. The metal bail is present and intact, and the can is empty. H 9.75″, W 6″, D 4.5″
