October Fall Classic
Lot 1172a:
Description
A wonderful piece of telecommunications history, this is a classic oak wall telephone by the Kellogg Switchboard & Supply Company of Chicago. This phone features a handsome quarter-sawn oak cabinet, external nickel-plated bells, and a Bakelite transmitter. This particular example tells a fascinating story of technological transition, having started life as a magneto crank phone (to call an operator) and later being cleverly modified with a rotary dial in a lower compartment for use on an automated network. The phone is in good cosmetic condition for its age, with an original finish showing minor scuffs and wear. The metal components have an age-appropriate patina, and the cloth cords are frayed. The back of the unit shows scratches from its long service life. 23 1/2″ H , 11″ W, 15″ D
