Description

This is a fantastic piece of political or fraternal history, likely an American sash from the late 19th or early 20th century. Sashes like this were commonly worn by members of campaign organizations, such as the “Wide Awakes,” or fraternal orders for parades and special events. The velvet is arrayed in striking vertical stripes of deep maroon and a golden tan/ochre color, trimmed on both edges with silver-tone metallic fringe. One end, which would rest over the shoulder, is dark green velvet and heavily embellished with ten tinsel and bead-work five-point stars, along with a prominent red, white, and blue rosette centered with a metallic star. The other, lower end features a similar, though slightly smaller, rosette. The reverse side is lined with a pale blue fabric, possibly silk or a similar plain-weave material, suggesting quality craftsmanship. The sash is in visibly aged condition, consistent with its likely era, exhibiting significant fading and discoloration to the velvet, particularly the golden-tan stripe. There is notable loss and fraying to the metallic fringe and tarnish to the metallic elements and tinsel stars. The rosettes are crumpled, and their fabric is frayed, with some loose threads and visible stitching securing the central star on the lower rosette. The blue lining also shows discoloration and staining. The sash is approximately 40″ long x 5″ wide. H 40″, W 5″. See photos.
