October Fall Classic
Lot 1147c:
Description
Impressive, oversized example of political Americana from the early 20th century: an exceptional embossed tin relief plaque featuring the profile bust of the 28th U.S. President, Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921). Measuring nearly two feet high, this is a spectacular piece of commemorative metalwork, far larger than the commonly seen smaller medallions. The technique utilizes tin, which has been expertly stamped in high relief and given a chemical finish to simulate the rich, dark patina of cast bronze. These large pieces were intended for prominent display in public buildings, clubs, or grand homes. The material is confirmed to be tin, which is prone to damage. The item included is the oval tin plaque itself. The condition is good considering the fragility and scale of the thin metal. The faux-bronze patina is rich and even, providing excellent contrast to the relief. It is in good condition, with some rust damage localized along the uppermost edge. Expected minor surface scratches and wear are present. H 23.5″, W 18.5″, D 1.5″. See photos.
