October Fall Classic
Lot 1090c:
Description
This is an absolutely fascinating piece of menswear history, one that speaks volumes about tailoring practices for “Stout” or “Extra Size” men in the mid-20th century. While we can’t definitively link these specific trousers to a historical “Fat Man’s Club” (a phenomenon from the late 19th and early 20th centuries where corpulence signified wealth), the massive size 74 waist clearly places them in the specialty big and tall market of the era. The style—high-waisted, wide-legged, and cuffed—is characteristic of 1940s to 1950s dress slacks. They are constructed from a heavy black wool or wool-blend fabric with essential period details like the metal zipper fly, interior tan cotton waistband lining, and jetted back pockets. A true rarity is the original handwritten tag left on the back pocket, noting the size “74”. The condition is fair to good vintage. There are no obvious tears, but the surface is generally worn and requires a professional cleaning to reveal its true color and texture. H 37″, W 37″, D 1″
