October Fall Classic
Lot 1086a:
Description
Fantastic example of a Late Victorian/Early Edwardian-era bicycle carbide lamp. This specific model, the “Solar” Model S, was manufactured by The Badger Brass Mfg. Co. of Kenosha, Wisconsin, as clearly marked on the rear. This acetylene gas-powered lamp features a distinctive silvered metal body—likely nickel-plated brass—with a bold, oversized faceted black jewel side glass and a clear front lens. The top has an embossed, ornate lid marked “SOLAR” and the base is stamped with various patent dates from 1896 to 1899, covering the US, England, and Canada, cementing its turn-of-the-century provenance. Included in this lot is the complete lamp body and internal burner assembly. The overall condition is good, exhibiting a heavy, age-appropriate patina and tarnishing to the silvered finish, consistent with years of use and storage. There are general surface scratches and scuffs, minor dings, and visible oxidation/rust on the iron mounting bracket hardware and some brass fittings, but no major structural damage. The internal carbide chamber shows remnants of black residue, the glass lenses and jewel appear intact, and it is noted that the carbide chamber pressure spring appears to be missing. H 7″, W 4″, D 5″.
