Description
This is a classic piece of early coin-operated Americana—the Daval “Imp” vending machine . Manufactured in Chicago, Illinois, by the Daval Manufacturing Company in the early 1930s (likely 1934-1936), this item is a true collector’s favorite from the penny arcade and countertop gaming era. This particular model is the one-cent mint and merchandise vendor and features the distinctive blue crinkle finish and three viewing windows that display the reel strips, a nod to its gambling machine origins which were being modified to comply with state vending laws. The solid cast metal cabinet gives it a pleasing heft. The included components are the main machine body, inner mechanism, front decal, and key. The condition is visibly used with heavy, honest playwear appropriate for a machine of this age. The original blue crinkle paint finish shows significant surface loss, scratching, and chipping, particularly on the edges and raised areas. The front “Imp” decal is worn and scratched but remains legible. The three glass viewing windows are present, and the reel strips with cigarette brands are visible but somewhat dark. The mechanism appears largely intact, though its full functionality cannot be guaranteed without inspection. The side coin entry and operating lever show heavy patina and wear.
