The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 2299b:
Description
Vintage (Tachi mok ko-gata) Japanese military sword GUARD (Tsuba) featuring four cherry blossoms (Sakura) at the four corners of the border, on both sides symbolizing the ephemeral nature of life or transient beauty with decorative openwork border. Possibly from the Meiji or Taisho period. Made for a Katana or Wakizashi sword, it is made of gilt bronze/alloy it measures 2.25” wide x 2.75” tall x .25” thick. It weighs 140 grams. There is a square shaped cutout at the side for a sword release clasp. The gilding exhibits a significant amount of wear, exposing much of the bronze/alloy base. Makers mark on the central top portion and hand signature marks on the side of the blade opening. A solid, heavy piece evocative of Japanese craftsmanship. Please see photos.
