The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 2292:
Description
This is a refined Japanese Tsuba (sword guard), likely dating to the late Edo period (19th century). The piece is crafted from forged iron in a traditional Mokko-gata (four-lobed) shape, featuring a heavy, dark patina. The face is decorated with Takazogan (high-relief inlay) depicting chrysanthemums and trailing foliage in a gold-colored alloy, likely brass or shakudo. The reverse features a more minimalist aesthetic with a small butterfly and stylized wave patterns. The two side openings (hitsu-ana) allowed for the handles of the utility knife (kozuka) and hair needle (kogai) to pass through the guard. The iron shows characteristic surface oxidation and pitting consistent with age, and there is slight wear to the delicate floral inlays. The item is presented in a custom wooden storage box with a purple textile lining. H 3.25″, W 3″, D 0.25″ Please see photos.
